The Ladue Middle School (LMS) Sixth Grade Camp program is receiving “Promising Practices” recognition from the Character Education Partnership, the same group that recognizes National Schools of Character. Promising Practices is a much smaller, more targeted award program.  Its purpose is to share good character education initiatives with schools across the country. The programs chosen are shared through publications and online media.
LMS’s application was called ”Mihaska – Once We Were Five, Now We Are One! – 6th Grade Camp”  It described how students are united from different elementary schools into one community by having them match puzzle piece name tags to each other.

The A team from the Liberal Arts and Science Academy (LASA) of Austin, Tex., won the 2014 High School National Academic Quiz Tournament Championship in Chicago this past weekend. St. John’s School of Houston, Tex., was second; LASA B was third; and Ladue Horton Watkins High School of Ladue, Mo., was fourth. The competition included 272 teams.

Other top finishers included Adlai E. Stevenson, Arcadia A team, and Maggie Walker Governor’s School in a tie for fifth place. Five teams tied for eighth place: Chattahoochee A, Dorman A, Ezell-Harding, Richard Montgomery and Western Albemarle.

National Academic Quiz Tournaments, LLC, organizes middle school, high school, community college, and college national quiz bowl championships in North America. Quiz bowl is a game in which teams compete head-to-head to answer questions from all areas of knowledge including history, literature, science, fine arts, current events, sports, and popular culture. NAQT was founded in 1996 by a group of former players. Those competitors are now college professors, high school teachers, lawyers, engineers, software developers, physicians, and research scientists who dedicate time to promote and improve the fast-paced question-and-answer game that was an important part of their lives. They hope to provide the next generation of students with more opportunities for competition.

The High School National Championship Tournament (HSNCT) is NAQT’s premier high school event. The tournament is held at the end of each school year and features the top quiz bowl teams from across the United States. The 2014 HSNCT was held at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare in Rosemont, Ill., on May 30 to June 1. LASA defended its HSNCT title from 2013 (which hasn’t been done since 2004-2005).

In 2013, Ali Gold, then a sophomore at Ladue Horton Watkins High School (LHWHS) came to her counselor, Joyce Davis, with an idea.  Ali wanted to start a cheerleading squad for students with special needs.

Many of these students struggle to make it through a day at the high school. They have autism, emotional disturbances or are intellectually disabled.  Ali, along with some friends, have brought these students together, taught them cheers, acquired uniforms and provided them with multiple opportunities to perform at school events.
During the Homecoming Pep Rally on Monday, October 6, 2014, the group performed to the delight of the entire student body who picked up the cheers being led by Sparkle Effect, and encouraged them every step of the way.  ”We could see the excitement on the faces of the squad,” said Davis.  ”It was very moving and made me proud to work at a school where students support each other in such a simple, yet amazing, way.”

Old Bonhomme’s Field Day a stl250 Event

Early October always includes the annual Field Day event at Old Bonhomme Elementary.  While the school always strives to incorporate unique themes and learning opportunities for students, the theme for this year was “Meet Me at Field Day” and activities were all about St. Louis.  As a result, the event was  recognized as a St. Louis Turns 250, or stl250, event.

Past field days have included themes such as the USA, Asia, Africa, recycling, and the Renaissance. This year, with the focus on St. Louis, activities connected to famous St. Louisans, and the history and traditions of St. Louis. Students will learn about Charles Lindbergh, the Lewis and Clark expedition, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, and the beginning of kindergarten in the United States, and more, while playing games.

“Ours is never an ‘ordinary field day’,” explains Connie Jander, physical education teacher and Field Day organizer for Old Bonhomme Elementary School.  “Combining learning with physical involvement is exactly how our brains learn best, and adding the stl250 component to the day makes it all that much richer for our students.”  According to the stl250 website, the initiative seeks to recognize events from “grassroots to grand scale” to help mark St. Louis’ anniversary milestone by joining events throughout the year that range from small neighborhood gatherings to large festivals.

Jander, along with Matt Prange, another physical education teacher and coach at Old Bonhomme Elementary coordinate Field Day each year.  The event is implemented by all of the teachers, supported by the parents, and enjoyed by every student.

Two Ladue Middle School students, Hale Masaki and Alex Krasnoff, attended Stonemaier Games’s Design Day, a game design event. Alex entered his game, Venturing Vaults, and playtested it twice with two different groups of people.

The event organizer, Jamey Stegmaier said in his blog post, “I think my favorite moment of the day was watching young Alex play his prototype with three playtesters who really got into the game. It reminded me of myself at that age–the best thing in the world was for people to have fun playing my games. I’m so impressed that Alex took the risk to polish his game and present it to complete strangers at Design Day.”  Hale took pride in winning one of the games he playtested with other adult gamers.

LMS teacher Kathleen Mercury attended and demoed her game, Dirty Birdy, as well.
